Chris Tiesler (tiesler)  > Machines > Portland Aerial Tram - Behind the Scenes Tour
The City of Portland is building a new tram from OHSU to the new South Waterfront District. These photos are from a cool tour I got to take in November. Enjoy!

Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > The tram leaving the station. The single support tower is 197 feet tall (and goes another 130 into the ground)! The tram still has its protective covering on.
Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > Anxiously awaiting arrival.
Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > Still watching the tram approach the lower station. They were load testing this day (it was a "worst-case" - this one is completely empty, the other is loaded to 200% capacity).

Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > A huge flywheel that carries the two inch thick rope (seriously, even though it's all steel, they still call it a rope).
Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > Below the lower station, the ropes are fixed to these giant bollards. Note the wood, which doesn't cause the rope to fray over time. The rope carries over 1 million pounds of force in tension!
Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > Me in front of one of the drive wheels attached to the diesel-electric drive motor. I'm happy because it wasn't spinning...

Chris Tiesler (tiesler) > The flywheels are big and mean business - see the red brake?
